highlanderlass I have been listening to Green and Yellow every day since Samโ€™s first video playing the banjo on GemsOnVHS! His music and vocal style is so authentic and unique, I love how he blends Scottish traditional folk music with American country and blues, all the while retaining his lovely Scottish accent! I highly suggest you listen to this talented young man and support this wonderful EP, the future of folk is in safe hands!

Matt Glenwright Hearing Sam helped me understand what folk music is really supposed to sound like. Highly skilled yet humble playing with honest, warm and playful singing... he instantly became one of my favorites with these songs and has been on repeat ever since. Favorite track: Song to a King.

Well I've been up since the early morn, I've been riding my bike and tootin' my horn, Well I've got nobody and I've got no cares, I'm gonna blow my six shooter in the air, I've got green and yellow on my mind. Well I don't have no where to go, I saw a black dog running underneath the crows, I heard an old song about a shepherd and a priest, About a big storm a comin' in from the east, I've got green and yellow on my mind. Walked on down a crumbling stair, I'm gonna grab Medusa by her hair, I don't think that I'll get old, Until I get my hands on a pot of gold, I've got green and yellow on my mind.

A stary crown lays, softly broken Near the branch of, a silver tree As my soul sings, sweetly stranded In the hold of your embrace CHORUS: Where have you gone, my king? Will you come back soon? With your hands held in the air Will you dance and sing As the sun will bring A new dawn here once more A purple dove flies, soaring swiftly Up above this lonesome place A golden river, whispers gently Softly down and away from here CHORUS In the desert, I see a ribbon Tied so loosely from a tree Thereโ€™s a grave there, reading sadly That the king is buried here CHORUS

about

GREEN AND YELLOW is a collection of songs from Edinburgh based singer-songwriter, Sam Shackleton. This six-track EP features three original tracks and three traditional (Roud) folk songs from Scotland and the United States. It was self recorded in one take on a single microphone in Sam's flat in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Sam Shackleton, also known by his moniker name, Sorley the Bard, is a Scottish folk artist, busker and folklorist. He has recently graduated from the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh, studying Scottish Studies and specialising in folklore and ethnomusicology. He spends his days writing, rambling, performing and busking around the streets of Edinburgh and beyond, sharing his unique musical style through his own writing and interpretation of the folk traditions, songs and ballads that came before him.

His music is deeply inspired by the rich musical oral traditions of Scotland, Ireland and the United States. He sings and plays banjo, guitar and harmonica. His unique sound is a mix of country, traditional, folk and blues with a Scottish spirit. He was born in Stirling and raised all over Scotland, from the Borders to the Highlands. His music is deeply inspired by the oral tradition, musical culture and landscapes of the Scottish nation. He views his music as part of the carrying stream of folk tradition.

His debut single, GREEN AND YELLOW is a uniquely modern folk song that weaves various different trans-Atlantic folk archetypes and themes together to sow an intricate and vivid tapestry of words and colourful imagery. The bright, fast paced harmonica, reminiscent of 1960's folk revivalists, foot tappin' rhythm, and Scottish accent work together in harmony to create a new and original folk tale full of vivid transcendental imagery which leaves much to the imagination!

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›"He sings! He plays banjo, guitar AND harmonica! He hangs on the crossroads where the musical oral traditions of Scotland, Ireland and the USA intersect." - RYAN VAN WINKLE๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›"You can always tell a busker from a studio musician, I like to think. Buskers are louder, more emotive, a throwback to a time of traveling Bards, before amplification. You have only moments to impress a passerby for tips, and it forces you to hone your craft. Sorley lives up to his moniker, "the Bard", and puts on a show." - ANTHONY SIMPKINS๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›"Green and Yellow โ€“ personally recommended by feature act Kirsty Heggie, Sorley played in the traditional US folk style with much gusto. Influenced by early Dylan and Woody Guthrie, this was a very confident performance. Lyrics had some political elements but were also funny. A young, happy man. Pink Collar Blues โ€“ about working in hospitality. Sorley's got his own thing going on โ€“ the Scottish accent, seamless transition between guitar and harmonica. Echoes of peak Johnny Cash." - OUT OF THE BEDROOM๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›
